Boundless: A California Invitational

Museum of Photographic Arts presents Boundless: A California Invitational, the third triennial exhibition of contemporary California photographers. The triennial invitational began in 2010 as State of Mind and was followed in 2013 by Staking Claim. These exhibitions showcase the talent and diverse scope of artwork by photographers living within the museum’s home state.

The exhibition features 11 California artists with work created in the past five years. The artists are both established and emerging, and the variety of work is as varied as the state of California itself. Boundless embraces the spirit of the infinite, of having no restrains. The work explores and confronts the subjects and traditions of the past, re-imagining the medium in our time. The result is a dynamic exhibition that highlights the constant evolution of the art form.

Meta-Landscapes:
Expressions of Temporal Consciousness,
New Abstractions in Photography

Artist Jason Engelund approaches photography by addressing psychological frameworks of different world-time views, and shifts in perceptions of time during individual events. The notion of a “visual time signature” is proposed, a phrase to describe types of temporal consciousness, incorporating cultural and individual time perception as they relate to cognition, experience, and image. Expressions of the “meta-landscape” encompassing both the psychological landscape and actual landscape are pictured and discussed.

House of Perception, A Prelude to the Horizon

House of Perception, a Prelude to the Horizon is an art and literature hybrid, combining abstract photography with poetic prose in a narrative moving from the captivating tragedy of the melancholic sublime towards the freedom of individual potential. The story is told through a challenging exploration of photography as a metaphor for our interpretation of reality. Through abstractions of photography a visual story unfolds about changing one’s perception to elude the oppressive, and find individuation and individual potential.

A preview to the concluding sequel of House of Perception is available. Art photo zines Through the Horizon and the Sun Never Sets are a two part series showing a story that explores the boundaries of visual perception and how we make meaning through seeing.
